Much Wenlock post office relocation views needed, says MP
An MP is urging residents in Much Wenlock to make their voices heard over plans to move a post office across the road.
Philip Dunne said it was vital people living in the town had their say about whether were for or against the plans.
Consultation has begun on where the town's post office should move to, with two rival businesses both competing for the contract. Much Wenlock's post office is currently housed at Number 9 High Street, but Post Office managers want it to move inside the town's Spar shop, about 300 metres down High Street.
John Corbo, the owner of the rival Nisa in Bridgnorth Road, also wants the branch placed within his business and has claimed the process has not been handled correctly. Mr Corbo claims his store is larger, and has better parking and access for people with mobility issues and parents with pushchairs.
He said he would contact Mr Dunne and the Office of Fair Trading with a view to possibly challenging the outcome. Mr Dunne said if the move did go ahead the branch would become one of the new style branches and be open for the same hours as the Spar convenience store.
He said: "I hope residents will respond to the consultation to ensure any concerns are addressed. But this move seems a sensible way to secure a Post Office branch in Much Wenlock town centre for the foreseeable future.
He added: "Many people rely increasingly on the post office for their personal or business banking, so I am pleased that we are seeing this investment in the branch network in the Ludlow constituency."
Posters and leaflets will be displayed in the existing branch at 9 High Street to let customers know about the proposed changes. The consultation ends on May 26.
