People around Whitchurch have reported seeing chalk marks on walls, building and pavements and some believe this could be linked to thieves marking homes where dogs live.
But police have said there is no evidence to suggest there are dog thieves in the area, or that the marks are linked to theft of animals.
They confirmed that no thefts have been reported but have asked people to "remain vigilant" and report any suspicious activity or anyone marking walls by contacting police on 101.
