Matthew Allan Robert Fryer, 27, of Leighton, near Welshpool, crashed his Vauxhall Astra into bollards in Church Street, Welshpool, on the evening of March 19.

Fryer, who admitted a charge of drink driving, was also fined £390 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £39 victim surcharge at Welshpool Magistrates Court yesterday.

He was also offered a drink-drive rehabilitation course which could see his ban reduced by five months.

Mrs Helen Tench, prosecuting, said: "Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision in Church Street at 10.30pm.

"On arrival, they had been told the driver had moved his car to the nearby car park and when they arrived at the scene they saw an Astra with significant front end damage. Officers spoke to the driver who told them 'I've had it' and he was arrested."

Once at the police station, Fryer gave a reading of 78 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.
