Hundreds sign up for Ironbridge Half Marathon
More than 600 runners have signed up to take on this year's Ironbridge Half Marathon.
The 13-mile route takes runners from Telford Town Park past Blists Hill Victorian Town, historic Coalport via the Silkin Way.
It is one of the most picturesque runs in the UK, taking runners across the famous Iron Bridge.
But it is also one of the most challenging, with the run starting in Telford Town park and descending into the Ironbridge gorge before a steep climb back to the finishing line.
Organisers said today that people from far and wide, including Australia and Denmark, had already signed up to take part in what has become a well-known event in the marathon calendar.
The challenge, which is organised by Telford Harriers, is now in its 26th year.
It takes place on April 19 and begins at 10.30am from the arena at Telford Town Park.
There are around 400 places left and money raised will go to Severn Hospice as well as a number of other charities.
And it's not all about experienced runners, as a fun run will also take place at the same time for those who wish to walk or jog.
Lisa Yeomans, race secretary, said the event had built year-on-year and people were attracted by the off-road route and the historic surroundings.
Families of runners are also able to enjoy the attractions of Telford Park and shopping centre while they wait for their loved-one to complete the race, or can travel to Ironbridge to join the crowds on the iconic bridge halfway along the route.
She said: " We have had almost 600 entries so far, and some from as far and wide as Australia.
"It is a great event and raises money for some good local causes. We are a not-for-profit organisation so all the money goes to the charities we support.
"We usually get around 600 entries and there is always the chance to sign up on the day."
She added that the other charities to benefit from the event had not yet been decided upon.
Organisers said the route remained the same each year, with only the direction changing.
It is mainly off-road and always starts in Telford Town Park.
Runners pass Blists Hill Victorian Town and Coalport on the Silkin Way.
They will then run along the disused Severn Valley railway line to the Iron Bridge, which usually sees crowds of cheering supporters.
Last year, more than £1,000 was donated to The Georgia Williams Trust from the event, which raises cash through the £20 entry fee for unaffiliated runners and £18 cost for affiliated members.
Runners can also sign up on the day, with a number of places left open for those who decided to take part last minute.
