The accident happened on the A41 near Newport and police closed a section of the road off for almost four hours tonight.

A woman driving one of the vehicles had to cut free from her car after injuring her neck but none of the injuries were believed to be serious.

Diversions were put in place from junction three of the M54 at Cosford and the junction with the B4379 close to Woodcote Hall Nursing Home, near Newport, after the crash at about 5.20pm yesterday.

Traffic was diverted via Sheriffhales but lanes around the area quickly became gridlocked.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said all three of the people injured were taken to Telford's Princess Royal Hospital by ambulance.

Inspector Lesley Williams of West Mercia Police, said the main two cars involved were a VW Golf and a Ford Mondeo.

She said: "None of the injuries were life-threatening but the patients were sent to hospital to be checked over.

"Highways were informed and we sent for recovery at about 8pm.

"The road was reopened about an hour later once all the vehicles had been removed."

Firefighters and an operation officer from Newport, Telford and Wellington were sent to cut the driver free.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews used cutters, spreaders and small gear to release the woman.

He said: "The crash involved five cars in collision on a road.

"One person was released using holmatro cutting equipment and conveyed to hospital via land ambulance."
