The major surface dressing programme started today as part of a £6 million maintenance scheme.

Telford & Wrekin Council has listed streets that will be dug up as part of the programme.

The work will start today, with a number of streets earmarked for work each week over the five-week period.

The council apologised for the inconvenience caused to motorists and householders, but insisted it was acting now to prevent further problems in the future.

Workmen are treating roads across the borough that are in relatively good condition in order to prevent the problem with potholes, which develop in winter months.

A layer of aggregate chippings and other materials are being used seal the surface and maintain the condition of roads.

The council says it allows roads to be maintained to a safe standard for longer before needing resurfacing which is much more costly, time consuming and causes greater traffic congestion.

Roads earmarked for the project include Halesfield 16, the A442 at Waters Upton and Pave Lane in Newport.

Work was scheduled to start today on roads including Aspen Way, Mere Grove, Harrington Heath, Hopkins Heath, Chepstow Drive, Chockleys Meadow and Chockleys Drive.

It will then move to roads including Urban Gardens, Lawrence Road, Dawley Road and Peveril Bank.

In many cases, works will last just one day and roads will normally not need to be closed but access to homes and businesses could be limited. Temporary traffic lights will be installed to control cars in busy areas.

Work on busier routes will not begin until 9.30am and will be completed by 3.30pm.

Councillor Shaun Davies said: "Residents in the areas affected are asked to be aware and may need to move parked vehicles.

"While we've scheduled this work in on particular dates, this may need to change as this work is dependent on the weather and temperatures.

"This is another important part of the major £6 million investment in improving the road network over three years as part of our pride in your community programme."

The work will carried out on behalf of the Council by RMS Ltd.
