Jeremy the terrapin was spotted at the mere last week. But because the mere is not his natural habitat there were fears for his welfare, so Shropshire Wildlife Trust appealed for help in capturing him.

Jeremy was spotted sunbathing on a fallen tree trunk and enjoying the Bank Holiday Easter sunshine, and a member of the public was able to pick him up and take him into the Boathouse in Ellesmere, home of the Shropshire Wildlife Trust.

Cath Price, who works at the trust, said the Jeremy needed to be caught as he was not part of the eco-system. And now she is appealing for someone who can re-home him.

"He has come home to live with me for the time being," said Cath. "He weighs over 1kg so is a big terrapin. He escaped in the back of my car when I took him home – he is quite a character."

It is thought that Jeremy could have been abandoned by his owners after outgrowing his home. Ms Price said: "He is fit and healthy and ready for a new home."

Anyone interested in re-homing Jeremy is asked to call (01691) 622981.
