The victim's PIN number had been left in his wallet when the card was taken by 35-year-old Nicky Marsh in June last year.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday Marsh was jailed for a total of six months having admitted stealing the card and 18 offences relating to the theft of the monies between June 3 and 12 last year.

The court heard that Marsh's partner had become friend's with victim Peter Wheatley's wife, and when Marsh and his partner were invited for a drink to the Wheatley's home, in Gloucester Road, Bicton Heath, Shrewsbury, the defendant took the card before going on a £3,450 spending spree.

Marsh, formerly of Ellesmere Road, Shrewsbury, and now living in Crewe, had also admitted stealing a mobile phone in a separate incident in April last year and obtaining £150 by deception when he sold it.
