Glyn rolls up sleeves to help canal revamp project
With other candidates sporting smart suits to canvas votes in Montgomeryshire, Conservative candidate Glyn Davies rolled up his sleeves to help out a project to restore the Montgomery Canal.
Mr Davies, fighting to retain his seat, found himself on a Canal and Rivers Trust working boat in the lock on the canal at Welshpool this week.
He also lent a hand to painting the lock gates and, with a hard hat and high-visibility vest he helped a small band of volunteers, including town mayor, Councillor Malcolm Douglass, spruce up the canal towpath. Councillor Douglass has made the restoration of the canal one of the main priorities of his mayoral year.
He has launched a friends group to adopt the section of the canal where it runs through Welshpool.
Office
Mr Davies said he was pleased to support the Mayor of Welshpool, as he led the group working on the Montgomery Canal.
"It's a big focus of his term of office," Mr Davies said.
"The Montgomery Canal has massive potential to put Montgomeryshire on the tourist map, bringing in visitors to the area.
"But we have to ensure that the canal can join up to the busy Llangollen Canal and the national waterways network."
Mr Douglass says reopening the canal would boost the town's economy and bring new jobs to Welshpool.
The canal begins at its junction with the Llangollen Canal near Ellesmere but is navigable only to Crickheath. Another navigable stretch runs from Welshpool to Ardleen with a section needing restoration along the route.
