The practice in Prees, near Whitchurch, has replaced one situated at the home of Dr Guy Carter, who has now retired. The Whitchurch Road centre, which will be officially opened on Wednesday, features four consulting rooms, nursing space, a treatment area, dispensary, waiting room and offices.

The Grocott Family Charitable Trust, set up by the owners of Whitchurch-based Grocontinental, has paid for the construction of the building.

Chairman Ray Grocott said:

"My family and I have had wonderful treatment from the village practice, we've lived in the area all our lives and I just couldn't stand by and see us lose our doctors' surgery."

The centre will be run by Wem and Prees Medical Practice, and the Grocott Family Charitable Trust will lease the building to the NHS for a nominal rent.

GP Jim Bartlett said: "The Prees practice now has a secure, long-term future thanks to the vision and generosity of Ray Grocott."
