Arthur Scargill calls for abolition of private schools
Thirty years after the miners' strike, Arthur Scargill is still going strong as leader of the Socialist Labour Party.
And he hasn't softened his views, telling supporters that public schools like Shrewsbury, Eton and Harrow should be abolished.
The 75-year-old, who led the miners' strike in the 1980s, said Britain's education system was in a mess and with the odds stacked against the poorest in society.
In an address to supporters at a working men's club in the Aberavon constituency, where former Labour leader Neil Kinnock's son Stephen is standing as a prospective MP, Mr Scargill said: "We should abolish all private schools because they are an elite which gives a better education because of the more money that is pumped into them.
"We believe all faith schools should be abolished as well because they are a breeding ground for prejudice. If Muslims, Buddhist, Catholics or Protestants can go to university together then they can go to school together."
