A public meeting will be held after the Highways Agency announced plans to close Church Street, in Welshpool town centre, for a week to carry out essential roadworks.
Business leaders, town councillors and members of the public all expressed their concern at the plans at a meeting of the town's business forum.
They say they fear businesses will be hit while the work is carried out by Scottish Power between May 18 and 22.
Town councillor Graham Breeze said it was "absolute madness", but the company has described the work as "essential".
A public meeting will be held in Welshpool Town Hall to debate the one-way system after the General Election.
