Council fury at Welshpool town centre roadworks
Roadworks which will close a Welshpool town centre street have been condemned by councillors.
The Highways Agency announced plans to close Church Street, in the town centre, for a week to carry out essential work between May 18 and 22.
The agency has described the work as "essential," but councillors, speaking at a meeting of Welshpool Town Council, said they were "disgusted" by the scheme.
They claimed queues caused by the closure could stretch the length of the town's bypass and into the nearby village of Trewern. Concern was also raised for businesses in Church Street.
The council resolved to write to Powys County Council and the Highways Agency to demand a meeting on the issue.
Councillor Phil Pritchard said: "I am appalled by this scheme. They think they can come here and cause chaos and do whatever they want. Well I am here to say they can't. It is an absolute disgrace.
Councillor Graham Breeze said he fears the town will be gridlocked.
He said: "While we have had a lengthy letter from the Highways Agency stating why they are doing this work, I have taken no comfort from their words.
"There has been no consideration for the residents of Welshpool or the businesses."
Councillor John Corfield added: "I am disgusted by it. Welshpool is the gateway to Wales and this is the start of tourist season."
