Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho pays tribute to 'fantastic' Shrewsbury Town fan Lloyd Burton
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has paid tribute to "fantastic" 11-year-old Shrewsbury Town fan Lloyd Burton - whose life was cut short last week.
Mourinho met up with Lloyd in October last year before the two teams met in the Capital One Cup at the Greenhous Meadow.
Lloyd died last Wednesday, two years after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.
After hearing of the tragedy, Mourinho said, through Chelsea's Twitter account: "I was deeply saddened to hear of young Lloyd's passing.
"It was an honour for me to meet this fantastic kid.
"My heart goes out to his parents. I think of them and his family and friends."
Chelsea FC also tweeted: "The thoughts of all at CFC are with family and friends of Shrewsbury fan Lloyd Burton."
Before the game last year, Mourinho made the Shrewsbury fan's night after he posed for a picture with Lloyd and signed an autograph for the young fan, who painted a portrait of the Portuguese tactician before the game.
Lloyd, who is from Shrewsbury and was a pupil at Meole Brace Primary School, was a promising player but underwent chemotherapy on a brain tumour which was diagnosed in May, 2013.
He was once scouted by a string of professional football clubs including Manchester United.
Lloyd, who used to play football for Bayston Hill under nines, met Mourinho in October when almost £1,000 was raised in his honour through the sale of a painting of the Chelsea manager, signed by "the Special One" when the Blues played Shrewsbury Town in the Capital One Cup.
He met Beckham while filming for Stand Up To Cancer, the joint national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 last October.
