Cyclists and fundraisers set off from the New Bucks Head football ground in Wellington yesterday on an 81-mile journey around the county, tackling the Wrekin Giant route which includes about 7,000 ft of climbs.

It saw them head out towards The Wrekin and cross the Long Mynd and the Stiperstones before returning to AFC Telford United's home ground.

Riders started to file back at about 3pm, having started their journey just after 8.30am.

Among the more than 200 riders who took advantage of the sunny Sunday weather was Georgia's sister Scarlett Williams, who admitted she had not had much practice for the ride.

She said: "It was really good to see how many people turned up especially for a Sunday morning.

"I was slightly nervous before the ride because I only cycle occasionally so it was a real challenge but you cannot ask people to get on board with something like this if you are not going to do it yourself.

"I knew I was going to do it come rain or shine even if it was the next morning I finished."

Another rider taking part, Andrew Rose, from Telford, a member of the Nova Raiders cycling club said: "It is a fabulous cause to support the Georgia Williams Trust.

"It raises awareness and profile of the trust and the more people that take part the more people will get to hear about the trust.

"It is quite a challenge. 7,000 ft of climbing to do so it has been a challenge.

"The atmosphere during the whole ride has been great everyone has been really excited about it. "

Stuart Wortley, from Admaston, a member of the Wrekin Sport group, added: "We do a type of ride out every week with Wrekin Sport. The club has about 18 people here.

"We all do a Sunday ride anyway - although not quite as long or as tough as this - but we normally do 50 miles or so on a Sunday so we thought we would join in with this and help raise some awareness for the trust which is a good local charity.

"We have done parts of this particular route before because the routes we cycle are always local routes but not all of this in one go like today."

Georgia's mother Lynnette Williams, said: "It has been a brilliant day and a brilliant turnout, we have had well over 200 people.

"People were leaving it to the last minute to see if it would be a nice day or not but it was so they have all decided to come out and do it."
