Battle will continue to get Shrewsbury removed from Wem addresses

Councillors in Wem have vowed to continue their campaign to remove Shrewsbury from the town's postal address.

Town councillors will again write to the Post Office after receiving a "disappointing" reply from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

In a letter to Wem Town Council, Michael Maynard from the Government department said: "I am sorry to hear of the issues you are facing, and I am aware you are in contact with Royal Mail. Changes to the postcode are governed under the Postal Address File (PAF) Code of Practice which has evolved following a series of consultations over the years."

The inclusion of the county town – 10 miles from Wem – has led to lost post and both delivery drivers and emergency services staff being misdirected.

At a town council meeting last night, Councillor Mandy Meakin, mayor of Wem, speaking at a town council meeting last night said: "I cannot understand why they keep saying we want the postcode changed – we do not. We have never asked for the postcode to change, we just want Shrewsbury off the address."

Councillor Pauline Dee said: "The letter makes no sense. We don't talk about the postcode. It is a daft letter."

The council has previously written to Royal Mail but the firm has said it was unable to make changes unless there was an "operational need" and that Shrewsbury was "the correct postal town for Wem".

The problem has been ongoing for several years.

Councillors voted to write again to Royal Mail.
