Cow rescued after slurry pit concrete gives way at Shropshire farm
A cow that got stuck in a sunken septic tank at a Shropshire farm was freed by fire crews.
Firefighters trained in animal rescue were called from Market Drayton and Wellington to Tom Farm on Bearstone Road, Woore, where the large cow had become trapped in a pit in the field it was in.
The crews were accompanied by a rescue tender and a vet at about 1.15pm on Saturday and released the animal by about 2.30pm.
John Pritchard, watch manager at Wellington Fire Station, said: "It appeared the cow had walked on top of the slurry pit and the concrete on top gave way underneath it.
"It had been put in the field that morning and was discovered in the afternoon, we don't know exactly how long it had been there."
"It was calm, but it was trapped, just tired from trying to get itself out."
The cow was hauled out of the pit by using a combination of using a combination of specialist strops and farm machinery.
It was then checked over by a vet but was fine, Mr Pritchard said.
"It just got up and walked away like nothing had happened," he said.
The cow was then returned to its original field.
