The owner of Christ Church in Welshpool, which is now a family home, said he was worried that the cross could have fallen and caused "significant damage" to the building.
Karl Meredith said moving the cross would have a minimal impact on the layout of the church.
The Grade II building was closed in 1998 and was bought by Mr Meredith and his family in 2002, and they are restoring it as a home.
