Arson attack behind Newport's Royal Victoria Hotel
Police are hunting arsonists who set fire to a large amount of mattresses in storage at Newport's empty Royal Victoria Hotel today.
The fire happened in a storage building at the back of the hotel, just before 4.30am.
Two crews from Newport and Wellington were sent to the scene in St Mary's Street, where it took them around an hour to put the fire out.
Abbey Hartley, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: "Police were called at 4.40am to The Royal Victoria Hotel in Newport following reports of a fire.
"When we arrived there was a fire in an outbuilding not attached to the hotel.
"It is been treated as arson and the offenders set fire to a large amount of materials inside the building. No one was injured during the fire.
"Anyone who has any information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 35S of the May 6."
