The Pengwern Boat Regatta takes place in Shrewsbury on Saturday and Sunday.

It will feature around 550 races – with one taking place every three minutes.

And forecasters say there is every indication that the blustery weather we have been experiencing this week may make way for more settled conditions

First held in 1871, the regatta will attract competitors from as many as 40 different rowing clubs.

Michael Ratcliff, from Pengwern Boat Club, said: "We usually get quite a lot of people to watch.

"Hopefully the weather will be good and it will be a nice day for all concerned. Some races are closer than others, we get some tight finishes and there will be people from competing clubs cheering the rowers on so that creates a good atmosphere."

Around 300 crews will take part in the racing between 8.30am and 6.30pm on Saturday, with another 250 expected to compete between 8.30am and 4.30pm on Sunday. Races will take place between the English Bridge and the boathouses opposite the Quarry.
