Jason Perry hit Daniel Page twice in the face, with the second blow causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the road, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told.

It was initially feared Mr Page had suffered life-threatening head injuries and he was transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital. But he was discharged and has since made a complete recovery.

Perry, 41, of Oakley Meadows, Wem, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm just before he was about to stand trial at court yesterday.

Mr Ian Windridge, prosecuting, said: "Oakley Meadows is a new estate. A certain number of houses are provided by the housing association. The complainant is a Daniel Page. He lived there with his partner Sarah Bailey and their children.

"Both were unemployed and reliant on state benefits. They were not the most popular family in that locality.

"On August 13, Mr Page was outside his house doing running repairs to his motor vehicle. Mr Perry came across the road from his address and there was a confrontation between the men and punches thrown.

"As a result of the second punch, Mr Page fell backwards and his head struck the road."

Injuries suffered by Mr Page included blood clotting to his head, swelling around his left eye, a broken nose and a small amount of internal bleeding.

Recorder Mr Roger Evans sentenced Perry to eight months in prison, suspended for a year.

Perry, a driver for Shropshire Truck & Trailer Parts in Wem, was also ordered to pay £1,800 compensation and £100 victim surcharge.

A restraining order was also imposed on Perry.
