Daniel Peter Cooke, 24, followed his brother Matthew Cooke upstairs brandishing a knife and fork on January 4, the day after the pair had argued.

The victim had tried to defend himself and had pinned his brother up against the wardrobe, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told.

As Matthew held the knife arm Daniel tried to bite him but Matthew managed to grab the knife and locked himself in his old bedroom, said Mr Kevin Jones, prosecuting.

Mr Jones said Daniel had stayed overnight on the sofa of the address and Matthew had been shocked to find him there in the morning as he got ready for work.

Daniel Cooke, of Clive Way in Shrewsbury, admitted a count of affray and was handed a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years. He was also served with an 18-month supervision order, a 12-month drug rehabilitation programme and a three-month curfew

Recorder Roger Evans said: "This knife did not contact anyone but it is serious.

"Under the influence of alcohol and hard drugs, you acted in a thoroughly dangerous fashion. Mercifully your brother was strong enough to stop you using it.

"You are on the brink of going to prison but I am going to give you a chance."
