But now Sydney John Hodgkins is preparing to put his feet up and reflect on a wonderful career.

The 73-year-old, who gave his name to S J Hodgkins, in Ellesmere, said lifestyles had changed over the years.

He opened the Scotland Street shop in 1969, at a time when everyone sat down for a weekly roast dinner.

He said: "There have been small changes to the shop, and people don't seem to buy as many joints any more.

"A lot of people want fast meals and nobody seems to sit down for a Sunday lunch as much any more – we still do of course. I am very proud of what we have had at the shop and I have made a lot of friends."

Mr Hodgkins also runs a turkey farm and over the years has sold more than 40,000 birds.

The butcher is not yet sure about the future of the shop when he closes in July.

He said: "There have been people that have come in for a long time, so I would like to thank them for all their support."
