Glider pilot injured in Shropshire crash

A pilot was taken to hospital after his glider crashed in Shropshire today.

The man was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with back pain after the crash near Station Road, Pontesbury today.

The accident happened at about 2pm and two fire engines, including the incident support unit and the rescue tender, were sent from Minsterley and Shrewsbury.

Ian Williams, control room inspector for West Mercia Police, said the pilot was "quite fortunate" not to have had more serious injuries.

He said: "We have been liaising with the air accident branch to help them with the investigation.

"The solo occupant of the aircraft had minor injuries and there was no damage to nearby properties.

"He was quite fortunate to not have had more serious injuries as the glider had come down under power lines."

A spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "The glider landed the right way up in a field.

"One man had back pain and was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital."
