Barry Anthony John Jones was more than three times over the drink drive limit at the time of the accident on May 2 – his fourth drink-driving offence.

Jones, 39, of Chapel Street, Dawley, admitted driving with excess alcohol when he appeared yesterday at Telford Magistrates Court.

He was also banned from driving for five years and ordered to pay a £80 victim surcharge and £150 criminal court costs.

Mrs Katie Price, prosecuting, said the collision had occurred in Southall Road in Dawley as a taxi turned off Brookside Avenue towards Aqueduct and collided with the defendant's Mitsubishi Spacewagon, which was driving on the wrong side of the road.

Mrs Price said the collision caused damage to the vehicles but no injuries.

Police officers attended and Jones later gave a reading of 124 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Mr Shakeel Ahmed, defending, said Jones had been fully cooperative with the police and told them that he had not had anything to eat for four days.

The defendant had been suffering from several "crises" and was in contact with the community mental health team.
