The project off Coppice Green Lane – including 30 affordable houses – was given the go-ahead yesterday.

New roads, footpaths and green areas will be created, and developer Barratt West Midlands/David Wilson Homes will hand over £500,000 towards's Shifnal's future highways strategy.

The 25-acre site will form part of a wider plan to build 1,600 homes in the town by 2026.

Members of Shropshire Council's south planning committee said they were pleasantly surprised by the plans.

Councillor Robert Tindall, who represents Brown Clee, said: "This is a well thought-out scheme, I think this is really verging on the inspirational."

Councillor Tina Woodward, for Alveley and Claverley, said: "I think they've worked very well with landscaping on the site. I'm happy to see decent sized gardens and areas that are almost communities within the community."

Councillor John Hurst-Knight, who represents Bridgnorth West and Tasley, said he was pleased the site had clearly been planned with waste management in mind.

He said: "I think this is a step forward, and very acceptable for everyone."
