Three fire crews were called to tackle a pile of about 200 tyres that had caught fire near Bridge Street Sports Centre in Leominster last night.

The firefighters, from Tenbury Wells, Leominster and Kingsland, fought the blaze for two hours after the alarm was raised at about 6.30pm.

The tyres had been left in the open on land down a lane off the B4361 at the northern entrance to the town, near the south Shropshire border.

Black smoke filled the sky over Bridge Street and Ridgemoor Road and crews were still at the scene damping down at about 9.30pm, though the main blaze was out by about 8.10pm.

A spokesman for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said as the blaze was in the open there was no danger of it spreading to other properties.

The cause of the blaze is unknown and being investigated, he said.
