Fight to save Wellington beauty spot is not over yet
Protesters who thought they had lost a battle to stop hundreds of homes being built on a beauty spot near Wellington have been urged to make their voices heard again after being thrown an unexpected lifeline.
Gladman Developments was given permission in principle to build 330 homes on land north of Haygate Road, known to locals as Haygate Fields.
Outline planning permission was granted despite residents putting together a petition carrying hundreds of signatures.
But this week it was revealed the development is one of 11 being called in by Telford & Wrekin Council to be looked at again after the authority confirmed it already had a five-year supply of new housing land.
It means the authority's planning committee will be asked to rule again on whether to grant planning permission – and interested parties will again be given the chance to object or comment.
Diane Treherne, of the Save Haygate Fields group,
said: "Gladman Developments have again applied for outline planning permission to build 330 houses on land north of Haygate Road.
"This has been done following the announcement by Telford & Wrekin Council that they now have in place a five year land supply for building houses. If you feel strongly about saving an area of outstanding beauty and an asset to the borough of Wellington there is still time to object.
She said comments must be in by next Tuesday (may26) either by emailing Gareth Thomas at planning.control@telford.gov.uk or writing to Development Management, PO Box 457 Wellington Civic Offices, Telford TF2 2FH quoting application number TWC/2015/0364.
Around 50 people attended the original meeting last year when outline planning permission was granted to the developer.
Objectors said such a large development would put too much pressure on local schools and roads, and would also the see the destruction of a popular green space.
