It's open gardens galore in Shropshire

A bumper crop of gardens will open in Shropshire for charity over the bank holiday weekend.

They will open as part of the National Gardens Scheme and include two that are opening for the first time. There will also be openings next week.

Upper Shelderton House at Shelderton between Ludlow and Craven Arms will open from Saturday to Monday.

The 6.5-acre garden was originally landscaped in 1962 and is still evolving. Visitors can view a wonderful array of rhododendrons and azaleas, which create an artist's palette of colour throughout the garden.

The plot also features specimen trees, woodland walks and sweeping lawns with many places to sit.

NGS spokeswoman Allison Walter said: "We're delighted this wonderful garden is opening for the first time. We're sure it will become a favourite with visitors."

Also opening for the first time on Wednesday from noon to 5pm will be the interesting, Italianate-style garden at Wollaston Lodge, between Welshpool and Shrewsbury. There are plenty of places to sit, enjoy a delicious afternoon tea, and the stunning views across the Welsh Hills from this formal garden.

There will also be two opportunities to visit the historic Walcot Hall estate on Sunday and Monday between 1.30 and 5.30pm.

Set in a magnificent location at Lydbury North, near Bishop's Castle, overlooking the mile long lake, visitors can enjoy an afternoon of strolling around Walcot's arboretum with colourful displays of trees and rhododendrons, originally planted by Lord Clive of India's son, Edward.

Two other popular NGS gardens will be open on Tuesday, Radnor Cottage in Clun and Brownhill House in Ruyton XI Towns.
