Hundreds back plans to rescue Bridgnorth centre's open air swimming pool
More than 1,500 people have voted to save an open air swimming pool, with just one person against the idea.
The Severn Centre in Highley, near Bridgnorth, held two public consultations after it was revealed the pool needed £120,000 worth of refurbishment.
Villagers in Highley were asked if they supported plans to save the pool, with the majority of funds coming from grants but with added chance of extra money coming out of taxpayers' pockets.
Residents almost unanimously agreed to save the pool and work has already begun to restore it. Work will now be carried out to reline the pool, which first opened in 1974, while the pump room equipment also needs replacing.
Jody Pietragallo, duty manager at the Severn Centre, said: "We have been really encouraged with the fundraising that has taken place already. An information stand is now at the centre with a totaliser, which has already reached £500. Anyone wishing to donate further funds to the pool is asked to get in contact with us."
The refurbishment will be overseen by the Swimming Pool Board, which includes representatives of Highley Parish Council, Severn Centre and Shropshire Council.
Mrs Pietragallo said: "We are also looking for two representatives from the community to join the board. More than 100 volunteers have come forward following the two public meetings and we currently have places available on the fundraising committee and the team distributing leaflets.
"Tickets are also available for a fashion show and race night in aid of the swimming pool fund."
The centre revealed earlier this year the condition and age of the pool meant without substantial work being carried out, the pool would have to close in September.
The outdoor swimming pool opens from May each year and is used for children's swimming lessons and for leisure. It opened for the new season on Saturday and will remain open until August 30.
