Wheelers stepping in to help pensioners in Wem
Pensioners in one county town are still able to get to the post office even though their branch has closed for refurbishment.
Volunteers in Wem are taking people who need assistance accessing post office services to alternative branches while the town's branch, in the Morris Shopping Centre, is closed.
It will reopen on June 9, with longer hours and an improved layout.
The North Salop Wheelers transport service then stepped in after concerns were raised by town councillors about how elderly people in Wem would get their pensions and use the post office services during the closure.
The group is providing a bus from Wem Post Office to Whitchurch Post Office on Mondays at 10am; to Market Drayton at 8.30am on Wednesdays; to Prees/Loppington on Thursdays at 10am and to Whitchurch on Fridays at 8.30am. Organisers say other options are available.
John Murray, mayor of Wem, said: "I did ask the North Salop Wheelers if they could help out and within a week they have come up with a timetable.
"They have been very quick to respond.
"It is all go now which is really good.
"It shows what a community can do when they need to help out.
"I am making North Salop Wheelers one of my charities this year as they are really marvellous.
"They are a great service to have."
