Former farm worker turned plant hire driver Joshua Bailey, 20, of Little Green, Bronington, near Whitchurch, sped off in a friend's car after spotting police in Wrexham – and reached speeds of 70mph in a 30mph area.

The vehicle then reached speeds of 90mph in the national 60mph speed limit area and was seen crossing solid white lines and was on the wrong side of the road on bends, prosecuting barrister Frances Willmott told Mold Crown Court yesterday.

Bailey, lost control and crashed into a garden wall. But he was immediately compliant when police approached. He admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop, drink-driving and no insurance following the incident on April 26.

He received a six-month youth custody sentence, suspended for 12 months, with 200 hours unpaid work.

The judge, Mr Recorder Charles Fox, banned him from driving for two years and ordered him to take an extended retest.

He was fined £500 for the charge of excess alcohol when he had a reading of 73 microgrammes. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

"I think you know that you stand there facing a custodial sentence today," the judge told him.
