Newport Swimming Pool and Aspirations Health and Fitness Suite, at Victoria Park, will be closed until at least tomorrow afternoon as contractors fix a burst water pipe.

Staff found water leaking into the building when arriving at work this morning. It was found to be a burst water pipe and Telford & Wrekin Council, which runs the facility, turned off the building's water supply.

Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "A mains water pipe has burst into the main reception area of Newport Swimming Pool and as a result the contractors have had to isolate and switch of the mains water into the building.

"Therefore we have no running water into the facility, this will affect the pool plant operation, changing and toilet facilities as well as water to normal taps.

"As a result of this, we are forced to close the Newport Swimming Pool Facility until the appropriate repairs can be carried out.

"Contractors are expecting the closure could take up until tomorrow afternoon (June 10) to be completed and before we can re-open.

"The centre staff are contacting those schools, swimming lesson students and regular booker who use the facility to advise them that the centre is closed."
