Ashley Broomhall, 27, from Higher Heath near Whitchurch, will be dressed as the famous Star Wars costume character throughout his climb as he raises money for Cancer Research UK.

The idea has been inspired by his mother Janet, 54, who was diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Ashley said: "My mum found a lump and it was diagnosed as breast cancer. She had an operation which was completely successful and got it all. Now she's having her second lot of radiotherapy.

"But I thought this was a nice goal to set. I am part of a UK Garrison, which is an organisation, and we dress up in Star Wars costumes all year round for fundraisers and events, and I enjoy mountain climbing. So I thought it was a nice goal."

"I am just hoping now for mild weather so I can do the climb on June 24. But there are a couple of other dates I can do if the weather is bad."

Ben Nevis is the UK's highest mountain at 1,344m high, towering over the town of Fort William. Generally,It tends to take about six to eight hours at a steady pace.

Ashley is a keen climber, and will be joined by friend Ron Skelley who will act as a spotter to carry water and guide him along the route.

Ashley said: "I started off with a small target to get the ball rolling, but any amount would be fantastic.

"People have been really supportive already. I did a trial climb up Snowdon the other day to make sure I could do it and I really have to say thank you, because people were just handing me money while I was walking up.

"It was a great uplifting experience.

"It makes some people's days seeing you dressed in a Star Wars costume.

"I went to a 17-year-old's funeral once, and it brightened up the day for his younger siblings. It is very special."

Ashley will be taking on the climb later this month.
