Gallery: Rain fails to dampen spirits at Newport Carnival
"The show must go on!" - that was the cry from Newport's mayor and revellers as thousands braved the rain for the town's annual carnival.
Despite the weather, onlookers enjoyed the parade, the carnival queen crowning and stalls and fairground rides at the event on Saturday.
Characters from family films flocked to the streets and youngsters enjoyed appearances from Captain America, Thor and Frozen princess Elsa.
The 2nd Church Aston Club Beavers and Cubs arrived as a group of Smurfs to the parade with their scout leader dressed as Papa Smurf.
While rain poured down, hundreds of guests huddled with umbrellas to cheer on the procession, which passed through the High Street.
This year's Royal Party was crowned in the morning ahead of the procession before travelling in a brightly decorated Royal Float.
The party was chosen after a competition in which children were encouraged to impress judges with a song, poem or dance performance.
Organisers wrote on the carnival's Facebook page: "Don't think it would have been a carnival without a little rain, it didn't bother us at all.
"It takes a lot of hard work behind the scenes, commitment and understanding for it all to come together and Saturday just proved how magical this event really is. A huge thank you to the whole community who supported the carnival."
Councillor Tim Nelson, mayor of Newport, said: "I had the honour of walking along the front with the town crier and the junior town crier and the band – it was an excellent event.
"It was just such an uplifting experience because Newport is known for its events and has a lot of well-attended events.
"On Saturday for example, we had a day where it was teeming down with rain all day and still a lot of people came out to support the floats. People had a lot of energy and thought into the floats.
While a procession of characters and vehicles passed through the streets, others braved the rain to take part in the Newport 10k run earlier that morning.
