Signs have been put up in Newport to make clear where drivers can park for free in the town.

It is hoped the idea will encourage more visitors to the area. The signs will be placed at approaches to the town and others will be placed at all car parks owned by Telford & Wrekin Council.

The town's free car parks are at New Street, Stafford Street and Water Lane, and councillors want to make sure residents and visitors get the message.

It is hope more visitors will take advantage of the free parking to visit or stay in the town centre, helping to boost tourism and the local economy.

Newport-based Telford & Wrekin borough councillor Peter Scott said: "I noticed a while ago we have no signs to our car parks and nothing to say parking is free.

"I spoke to many of the local groups related to the high street who agreed something needed to be done so I contacted Telford & Wrekin Council who listened and acted upon my suggestions.

"We now have signs to all of the Telford & Wrekin car parks as well as free parking banners on the car parks and the approaches to the town.

"I am very pleased that the borough council has responded in such a positive manner. "

"I think it is a big plus that we have free parking here, but visitors do not know about it."
