Officers on the night shift in Oswestry came across the cow which was well and truly trapped in the grid at the entrance to a farm just on the A483 close to the town.

The hapless animal had tried to cross the cattle grid at about 2am on Wednesday morning but soon found out how the grid got its name when its hoofs got stuck between the iron slats.

Sergeant Lee Johnson Police said the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted but in the end it was the farmer who was able to release his animal by putting a rope harness around her and hoisting her up and out of the cattle grid with his tractor.

"The 'silly cow' was rescued by the farmer – you could say she was over the moon," Sergeant Johnson said said.
