Appeal for Muslim burial plots in Ludlow

An appeal has been made for burial plots specifically for Muslims to be made available in the county.

Ludlow Town Council is being called upon to consider giving a plot of Ludlow Cemetery over to Muslim graves, as there is currently nowhere in south Shropshire for Islamic followers to be buried.

Muslim leaders in Shrewsbury say there is a similar lack of provision there – or anywhere west of the Telford area, where the Shropshire Islamic Foundation is able to use Wellington Cemetery.

Some people living in the county are having to travel as far as Manchester to visit the graves of loved ones, it has been claimed.

Eric Williams, clerk of Craven Arms Town Council, has raised the issue on behalf of the Islamic community in the south Shropshire town, which contains halal specialist abattoir Euro Quality Lambs Ltd and the area's only mosque, run out of a house on Newton Street.

Mr Williams said there are about 150 Muslim people in Craven Arms, Ludlow and Church Stretton combined.
