The burglary happened at a home on Chetwynd Grove in Newport last night.

It is believed the suspects entered the house through a rear door and stole a number of items including a laptop computer, handbag, purse and a silver bowl.

The owners of the house woke up this morning to discover the items missing.

Police say a number of items taken from the property were discovered by officers after being discarded in a nearby canal.

Constable Lee Thomas, from the Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team. said: "Burglary and other crimes remain very low in Newport, however that doesn't detract from the distress an incident like this causes for the victims themselves.

"We would appeal for anyone who saw persons acting suspiciously in the Forton Road or Chetwynd Grove areas after 11.00pm last night to contact police with any information they can provide."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 101.

Alternatively, information can be given anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers by dialling 0800 555 111.
