Newport homes bid to be reconsidered
A controversial application to build 350 homes on the outskirts of Newport will be re-considered at a meeting this evening.
Approval had already been given in 2013 to build the homes on land on either side of Station Road in Newport.
But the plan is going back before Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee tonight after the council managed to prove it had fulfilled its five-year housing quota.
However, despite having identified enough land for new homes, the council's officers are still recommending approval for the plan for the second time.
The homes would be built on fields next to a site which had been earmarked for a Sainsbury's store. But after that application was withdrawn, the council, which owns the land, announced it would push for 120 homes instead.
Campaigners have said if all plans are approved, the developments would lead to a "village within a town".
The meeting takes place at 6pm at the Telford College of Arts and Technology in Wellington.
