Wayne Gibson, 49, also hit his partner in the face as he opened the door, and pulled her ponytail.

Gibson, of Withywood Drive, Malinslee, had changed his plea to guilty just before sentencing.

Shrewsbury Crown Court heard how Gibson and his partner, with whom he is still in a relationship, had spent the day drinking in various pubs on February 12.

Gibson had opened the bedroom door, striking her in the face, pulled her by her hair and kicked her in the ribs when she fell to the floor.

Mr Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said: "Mr Gibson pushed the door with a force of six out of 10 to get into the room.

"At this point she was sitting on the bed throwing clothes around.

"He grabbed hold of her, pulled her out of the bedroom towards the front door and whilst on the floor she was kicked in the ribs."

Mr Jones said Gibson's partner had given an interview soon after the incident saying she did not want him to be prosecuted and the relationship had recommenced.

The court heard how Gibson had previous offences dating back to 1997, including one for threatening behaviour in 2013.

Ms Lisa Hancox, defending, said Gibson was not usually a violent man.

She said: "His last conviction for violence was in 2007 and it's obvious this is a couple that wishes to be together.

"The couple have been together for five years and are now dealing with the issues between them.

"Mr Gibson is not proud of his actions."

Recorder Nigel Daly sentencing Gibson said he had caused considerable pain with his actions.

He said: "You had not facilitated a guilty plea until today and did not accept the level of violence caused.

"The main starting point for this is nine months in prison but I will give you credit for eventually pleading guilty, which will reduce your sentence to eight months.

"You will spend half of that time in prison and the remainder on licence."
