Residents and businesses in Market Drayton found themselves with either no water or low pressure for more than 16 hours after a pump at a nearby pumping station failed.

Severn Trent said it received about 50 calls from people suffering with problems.

The problems were first reported at about 8pm yesterday and the utility firm said residents were beginning to see their water come back on as normal this afternoon.

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: "We found that one pump at a nearby pumping station had failed.

"Yesterday was such a hot day so there was a high use of water and a lot of water was taken out of the pumps. One of the pumps became air locked and it was full of air rather than water.

"Engineers were hard at work bleeding the system, getting rid of the air and recharging the system."
