Dismay after Sainsbury's U-turn on new Market Drayton store

Frustrated residents claim Market Drayton has been "forgotten about" after Sainsbury's revealed it will not be building a new store in the town.

The supermarket giant said its application to build at Vicon Works Industrial Estate, off the A53, was no longer viable due to changing shopping patterns.

Store chiefs were also "very disappointed" at the length of time it took to finally get their plans approved.

The application was given planning permission by Shropshire Council in 2013 but the retailer had to wait for final planning approval earlier this year following a review by the Government.

The news has been met with dismay from shoppers in the town.

Vera Jones, 70, of Dalelands, Market Drayton, said: "I think it is very sad news. Market Drayton is always forgotten about. We would have liked to see a larger Sainsbury's."

Dorothy Beavan, 69, of Whitchurch, said: "I come to Market Drayton to do my shopping but soon I will have to go elsewhere as a lot of the shops are closing down and there are not as many facilities now.

"I think it is very sad that Sainsbury's will not be coming to the town, it would have been a good addition for everyone.

"The best thing about the town is market day – so I hope that continues to thrive."

The decision has also proved unpopular on the Market Drayton community Facebook page, the Drayton Crier.

Elliott Powell posted: "Does anyone actually care about Drayton. Why are we always outcasted. We need another supermarket.

"Just seems that we don't get a second look these days."
