Severn Trent set to fix a leak . . . in Leek Street

It's Leek by name and literally leak by nature for one road in a market town.

Leek Street in Wem has experienced a water leak for up to six weeks which has caused disruption for residents and motorists. Residents say they are fed up at how long it has taken Severn Trent Water to fix the problem.

But the utility firm has apologised for the delay and said it is due to be fixed today.

The leak is not believed to have caused people to lose their water supply or affect their water pressure.

Lorraine Clorley, manager of the Severn Hospice shop in Leek Street, said: "I would say it's been here about five or six weeks.

"It hasn't really affected the business itself but obviously people have had to use the other side of the road to avoid it."

She added workman arrived on site yestreday to try to fix the problem.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "If they are going to finally get it sorted, it's about time.

"It must have been there for weeks. It didn't start off very bad but it's got worse.

"Cars have been wading through it and people have had to walk near to the walk to avoid it. One lady I know almost slipped on it. If it had been the winter it would have been terribly slippy."

Councillor John Murray, mayor of Wem, who reported the leak to Severn Trent, said: "I am glad to hear they are doing something about it as the time it has taken has not been good enough."

A spokeswoman for Severn Trent Water said: "Work to fix the leak is due to be carried out on Thursday.

"When there are leaks such as this one, we encourage customers to report them to us.

"We have to prioritise leaks in terms of how much they are affecting water supply.

"We are sorry how long this one has taken to sort it but it is important we prioritise them."
