Letter: Roadworks without notice unacceptable

The recent un-forewarned A49 road works in Craven Arms and involving five way lights (including the Harry Tuffins supermarket) shows a blatant disregard for road users.

The utility company involved should be fined for their failure to:

a) provide adequate warning.

b) for not working overnight to minimize the period of disruption.

At one point the southbound queue stretched as far back as Strefford and given current forms of communication it is absolutely unacceptable behaviour, even by Shropshire Council standards let alone the Highways Agency.

It is time for our councillors and MPs to get a grip on the situation and whilst they are at it, also push to get this vital north-south link dualled or at the very least, vastly improved.

I am tired of seeing calls to improve the east west links in Shropshire but the users of the A49 have suffered long enough.

My late uncle campaigned for the A49 to be made into a dual carriageway over 15 years ago when he served on the county council, but to no avail.

So come on Shropshire Council, let's hear it for the A49 for a change and get this vital artery upgraded while the Government are talking roads again.
