Welshpool one-way system protest cancelled
A planned protest against a controversial one-way system which could have brought traffic travelling to the National Eisteddfod to a halt will not go ahead.
Councillors in Welshpool had planned to stand in the road next week to stop traffic travelling around the town's unpopular road system.
It had been hoped it would have held up ministers and officials travelling to the Eisteddfod in nearby Meifod.
But after Welsh Assembly minister for transport Edwina Hart agreed to meet Welshpool Town Council, the protest had been shelved.
Councillor Graham Breeze, Welshpool town councillor, said: "No protest will happen now. We are pleased that Mrs Hart is coming to meet us and we can put our views across to her.
"Mrs Hart has been a friend to Mid Wales and the Welshpool area in the past and I am hoping she will take our concerns on board and we can move forward with our plans."
Last week, councillors decided to write to the Welsh Government's Trunk Road Agency to ask for a review of the system, which has seen Brook Street and Union Street turned one-way and created a large loop around the town centre.
Councillors have also resolved to ask to be fully involved in any review of the system.
