It came as a surprise to police officers working a night shift when they came across an unlikely creature in the middle of a road.

This male otter had been hit by a car on Jiggers Bank in Ironbridge and officers spotted him lying unconscious as they headed towards a job nearby on Tuesday.

Constable Ross Cookson, of West Mercia Police's operational patrol unit for Shrewsbury and Telford, said: "We found this chap on the road, putting all our first aid skills to the test. We'd never seen an otter in the road and he seemed to be quite a way from the water. We couldn't work out what he was doing on Jiggers Bank, it's quite a steep bank."

Officers managed to scoop the poorly creature up and put him the boot of the car before they headed to Haygate Vets in Wellington Road, Telford.

The lucky otter is now safe and well at RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre, where he will remain until staff release him back into the wild.

Pc Cookson added: "At first we thought it was a cat so we pulled over to see how it was and when we found it was an otter we couldn't believe it. The vets were amazing and they said they had never treated an otter before.

"They gave him some medication, fed him and soon enough he perked up and was trying to fight to get away."
