Grass fire smoke closes busy Telford road

A busy roundabout in Telford was closed during the evening rush hour due to a nearby grass fire, causing delays for motorists.

The fire, which involved about 600 square metres of grass and undergrowth, broke out close to Wombridge Way in Oakengates.

Police closed the Beverley island at the A518 at about 5pm yesterday to ensure the safety of passing motorists.

Flames and smoke could be seen from the road.

Two fire crews attended the scene from Telford Central and Wellington and used two hose reel jets, beaters and two aqua-packs to tackle the fire. Firefighters stayed at the scene to damp down after extinguishing the main fire.

The road was reopened at about 5.35pm. Members of West Mercia Police's safer neighbourhood team for Wellington praised the efforts of the fire crews.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue in putting the fire out and tweeted a picture of the fire.
