A charity which rescues and rehomes cats and kittens has launched a new branch in Shropshire because of growing demand.

Market Drayton-based Shropshire Street Cats has opened its three-pen rehoming centre just outside of Whitchurch.

The charity was set up by a group of volunteers who had previously worked at the north Shropshire branch of Cats Protection, which closed in January 2013 leaving a demand for rehoming provision in the area.

Today the charity, which was formed towards the end of 2013, is made up of a small team of volunteers and cat foster carers.

Jane Jones, who is a co-ordinator of the charity, said: "Our growing charity rehomed over 100 cats and kittens in its first year alone, showing how much we are needed.

"We have now increased the number of cats we can care for by opening a three-pen rehoming centre just outside of Whitchurch.

"The Whitchurch branch currently has two cats and six kittens all looking for forever homes, as well as the many others we have in our Market Drayton foster homes."

All of the cats that are adopted through Shropshire Street Cats come with their first vaccination, microchipping, neutering, flea and worm treatment and vet health check, as well as four weeks' insurance.

Ms Jones added: "We are also asking the public to consider helping us in other ways; by donating food, especially kitten food, to our donation basket in Poundstretcher, Whitchurch, or by attending one of our fundraising events advertised on our Facebook page."

The north Shropshire branch of Cats Protection, set up in May 2011, had seven volunteers who mainly operated in the Market Drayton, Whitchurch and Wem areas.
