Yesterday owners made sure their dogs looked their best for the annual Wem Dog Show at the town's recreation ground.

Meanwhile on Saturday a new doggy-themed day in aid of a new charity was staged near Shifnal.

The Give a Dog a Gift charity was started last year to raise money for various small dog rescue organisations across UK and Ireland, including in the Shropshire and Staffordshire areas.

Fundraiser Yvette Jones, who lives in Cannock, organised Saturday's family fun day at Ted's Caravan and Camp Site at Hungerhill Farm, Sheriffhales.

She said: "We only launched in September so we were really daunted to put on an event like this in case nobody showed up but it was a big success.

"We wanted to do a doggy event to thank our supporters who have done sky dives, raffles, tombolas and run half marathons for us."

Yvette said more than 100 people attended with 80 dogs signed up for 10 novelty dog class competitions.

It was a similar story at Wem recreation ground yesterday for the dog show in aid of Primchurch Boarding and Rescue Kennels.

Activities included a car boot sale, raffle draw and dog show with both pedigree and fun classes, plus dog displays.

Primchurch, based in Prees, near Whitchurch, is the only kennels in north Shropshire that offers a boarding and rehoming service for stray and rescue dogs.

Kennels spokeswoman Jacqui Downes said the money raised would be a big help.

She said anyone who could help in any way could get in touch on 01948 840220.
